With the 28th pick in the MLB Draft, the Houston Astros select Drew Gilbert, Minnesota native and center fielder for the University of Tennessee Volunteers.

Gilbert’s stats from the 2022 season are impressive. He started 57-of-58 games and had a .362 batting average through 199 at bats.  He had an OPS of 1.128 with a slugging percentage of .673. He hit 11 home runs, 70 RBIs, and scored 60 runs on the season.

Although Gilbert garnered much attention for his performance on the field, his most (in)famous moment came during the first game of the NCAA Super Regional against Notre Dame. In the bottom of the 5th with a 1-0 count, Gilbert’s at-bat ended abruptly when the umpire called a strike at what Gilbert thought was a ball.

The outfielder then turned to the umpire and used an expletive to describe his decision, which resulted in his suspension for the rest of the game, as well as the game the following day.

This is Gilbert’s second appearance in the MLB draft; he was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 35th round in 2019.
