The NCAA’s decision to allow Bru McCoy to be eligible for this season wasn’t just a boost to Tennessee’s offense. It was an indelible moment for Vols’ head coach Josh Heupel that he won’t soon forget.

Heupel received news that McCoy would be eligible late last week. His availability had been held up because of multiple transfers and a delay that took place somewhere between the Southern California administration office and the NCAA. McCoy transferred from USC to come to Tennessee following the 2021 season.

“Having a chance to tell him (that he’s eligible) and then hear him tell his dad was one of the great moments in my career,” Heupel said. “You could just tell the sense of excitement and some relief for them that they’re just able to move on and go compete. Really special for him and his family.”

McCoy is far from a superstar yet. However, the former five-star prospect is thought to have the ability to replace Velus Jones Jr., who was selected in the third round of the NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears after an explosive season in 2021 for the Vols.

Heupel didn’t seem at all surprised by the NCAA’s decision to deem McCoy eligible. However, there had to be some concern as things drug on through preseason camp.

“Certainly a small sense of relief, more than anything just excitement,” Heupel said when asked about his emotions about the decision. “When I got the news, man, it sent chills down my spine.  I’m so excited for him, a young man that’s done it the right way since he’s been here.

“Has gone through a long, winding journey to get to this point. Now, he has an opportunity to move forward with his future and go compete with his teammates, his brothers.”

Now, he’s officially a part of the family.
