Tennessee Football Recruiting: Four-star WR looking like a Vols’ lean

Tennessee is still looking for another wide receiver to round out their 2023 class, and Traylon Ray may be that guy.

Ray, a four-star receiver from Tallahassee, Fla., has been building a relationship with Tennessee wide receiver coach Kelsey Pope. Pope was promoted to wide receiver coach before the 2022 season following the departure of Kodi Burns to the NFL.

Pope is not only forming a relationship on the field with Ray, but also becoming a mentor.

“He speaks with me every day and our relationship is from a coach’s standpoint and from a mentor standpoint,” Ray told Volquest. “He talks to me all the time, not only about football but about life as well. If I need anything or have any questions, he tells me to call or text him – even if it is not for Tennessee.”

Ray was extended a scholarship offer by Tennessee on March 4 and he was on campus for a visit at the end of June. The 6-foot-1.5 and 186-pound receiver from North Florida Christian High School is expected to be in Knoxville again on Oct. 15 when the Volunteers host Alabama.

Ray is expected to make his college decision in October. He released his top three earlier this month, including West Virginia and Mississippi St. along with Tennessee.

It is safe to assume Tennessee is in a great spot to land Ray. Not only does his high school run a similar offense to Tennessee, but the four-star prospect has been impressed with the 3-0 start to the Volunteers’ season.
