In case you’ve been stranded on a deserted island with no streaming service available, Tennessee’s offense is really good. How good? Well, take a look at the numbers.
The Vols are tied for second in the nation in scoring offense with 48.5 points per game, along with Texas Christian. Ohio State leads the nation in scoring offense with 48.8 points per game. The Vols are No. 1 in the nation in total offense with 559.3 yards per game.
Of course, the Vols are most dominant in the air. Tennessee is tied with the University of Texas-San Antonio as the top passing offense in the nation with 365.8 yards per game. On further inspection, Tennessee is even better than that. In terms of points per minute, the Vols are tops in the nation, according to statistics provided by Tennessee’s Sports Information Department.
That’s the good news. The bad news is that the Vols are 95th in the nation in passing yards allowed, averaging 407 yards per game. Tennessee’s passing defense has been criticized thoroughly this season. The statistics show that such criticism is warranted. UT’s pass defense is 128th in the nation. Considering there are only 131 FBS schools, that’s almost as bad as you can get.
In case you haven’t noticed, Tennessee’s entire program is built around its offense. That has been the case since Josh Heupel was named head coach before the 2021 season and won’t likely change anytime soon. Credit Heupel’s offense with being aggressive and protecting the ball at the same time. Another set of stats provided by Tennessee’s SID is very telling. The Vols have thrown the fewest interceptions in the nation under Heupel since the beginning of the 2021 season.
