Jack Luttrell was the first commitment to Tennessee football for 2023. The prospect out of Georgia committed to the Vols on Aug. 1, 2021. Here are five things to know about him.
Where Luttrell ranks
Lutrell is a three-star prospect across the board. He measures out at 6-foot and 172-pounds.
247Sports ranks Lutrell as the No. 87 prospect from Georgia, and the No. 74 safety in the class of 2023.
ON3 holds Lutrell as the No. 133 prospect from Georgia, and the No. 121 safety.
Rivals puts Lutrell as the No. 56 prospect from Georgia and the No. 39 safety.
Tennessee football’s first 2023 commitment
When Luttrell committed to the Vols in July 2021, he marked Josh Heupel’s first commitment in the class of 2023.
Tennessee extended Lutrell a scholarship offer in May 2021. He camped with the Volunteers a couple of times before verbally committing to the Orange and White.
Luttrell chose Tennessee football over Texas A&M, Memphis, Notre Dame and Arkansas, among others.
Position of need
Anyone who watched Tennessee this season knows the Volunteers could use help in the secondary, and Lutrell can provide that.
Listed as an athlete, Lutrell projects as a safety in college. Coming out of Colquitt County High School in Moultrie, Ga., he has put in work in the secondary.
Luttrell made his presence felt in one of the toughest divisions in Georgia High School football.
In Colquitt County’s big win over Pebblebrook in Georgia’s 7A high school playoffs, Luttrell opened the game with a pick-six and set the tone.
Luttrell is a natural leader
Up big in a playoff game, many starters may celebrate and not pay attention once the second strings are in.
Not Luttrell.
A senior on a fairly young Colquitt County roster, Luttrell used his time on the sidelines to lead the younger defensive backs. Luttrell’s leadership will pay off in Knoxville and help a Tennessee football locker room that had rumored turmoil later in the year this season.
Knoxville ties
There is no questioning Luttrell’s loyalty to Tennessee.
Luttrell’s father grew up in Knoxville and played his football for Carter High School. He went on to play football at Carson-Newman in Jefferson City.
Luttrell’s mother also went to Carson-Newman, playing soccer.
The three-star prospect and Heupel’s first 2023 commitment seems to be East Tennessee through and through.
