The Vols landed their fourth commitment in the 2024 class on Saturday. Marcus Goree Jr. announced that he will be committing to Tennessee football.
Goree chose Tennessee over his recently named finalists of Colorado, Michigan, Michigan State and Nebraska.
The prospect out of Bradley Central High School in Cleveland, Tenn., had received a crystal ball from Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports.
Throughout his recruitment, Tennessee football remained the favorite to land the cornerback.
Goree was last on campus for Tennessee’s junior day on Jan. 14. He was also in town for two of Tennessee’s home games. Goree quickly emerged as one of Tennessee’s top targets in the class of 2024.
The three-star prospect most recently went to Colorado for Deion Sanders’ junior day. Colorado had been moving up on his recruitment steadily.
The athlete ranks as the No. 461 prospect nationally and the No. 10 prospect from Tennessee. He also ranks as the No. 61 athlete in his class.
The 6-foot-0.5 and 170-pound cornerback picked up 56 tackles with 11 for loss, two picks, one sack, and one forced fumble.
Goree joins four-star athlete Johnathan Echols, four-star cornerback Kaleb Beasley and three-star defensive lineman Carson Gentle as 2024 commitments.
Cooper Petagna of 247Sports projects Goree could be a multi-year starter at the power-five level.
“Long fluid athlete that’s positioned primarily at the strong safety position and excels closer to the line of scrimmage,” Petgana writes. “Exhibits good lateral range and closing speed. Shows the ability to play sideline to sideline. Reactionary defender that plays with very little wasted motion and shows the ability to key and diagnose in the short to intermediate part of the field. Strong run support defender. Physical tackler that will strike you at the point of attack. Possesses situational pass rush ability from the second level.
“Limited sample size as a pass defender. Flashes some ability to play the deep part of the field but typically is not asked to play man to man as a slot defender. Although evidence is limited, appears to possess the athletic ability to cover possession receivers and tight ends over the slot.
“Good athlete that projects as a multi-year starter at a Power Five program at the next level. Sunday ceiling will be dictated by growth potential, versatility in the passing game and speed. Possesses the ability to contribute early on special teams and should ultimately need a year in a strength and conditioning program before seeing considerable snaps on defense.”
