Jimmy Hyams joins Caleb Calhoun and Dave Hooker to discuss the method Tennessee Football is employing to acquire talent, a former UT defensive end on the move again and Nico Iamaleava’s impact on recruiting. Off the Hook Sports’ Wednesday, Jan. 17 podcast also covers Nick Saban, Nate Oats and the Basketball Vols.
Is NIL model for Tennessee Football unsustainable?
Name, image and likeness has had a huge impact on the way Tennessee Football has assembled its upcoming roster under Josh Heupel, but is the model sustainable for the Vols long-term? Jimmy Hyams joins the show to raise questions about it and discuss how UT should change its approach to recruiting.
Tyler Baron flips to Louisville
Former Tennessee Football defensive end Tyler Baron, who just transferred from the Vols to the Ole Miss Rebels less than two months after liking a tweet complaining about UT’s use of NIL funds, is on the move again. Baron has flipped to the Louisville Cardinals. Is this evidence that he’s just following money? Hyams remains on to discuss.
Nico Iamaleava and Tennessee Football recruiting
Does what Tennessee Football does on the recruiting trail right now really matter? Will Nico Iamaleava be such a spectacular player in Josh Heupel’s system that it will outweigh any deficiencies, and will his play alone attract top talent in the coming years? Could he be another Peyton Manning or Johnny Manziel? Hyams stays on to give his take.
Difficulties of following a legend?
What’s harder for a new head coach: following a legend like Kalen DeBoer is Nick Saban with the Alabama Crimson Tide or taking over a program in terrible shape like Tennessee Football was in going from Jeremy Pruitt to Josh Heupel? How have successors to legends fared in the past?
UT Basketball beats Florida
Dalton Knecht had 39 points, his second straight game of over 35 points, and Jonas Aidoo had 19 points and nine rebounds, leading Tennessee Basketball to an impressive home win over the Gators Tuesday. J.P. Estrella had an emergence too to prove frontcourt depth. Have the Vols shown they’re equipped for March?
Nate Oats pushes player
In a game against the Missouri Tigers, Alabama head coach Nate Oats pushed a Mizzou basketball player with the referee involved on a dead ball. What type of punishment should be handed down to Oats. He did apologize, to be fair, but should he receive the same treatment a player would get for hitting a coach?
One Response
Following a legend (Saban) or following a flop (Pruitt)? Well, Vols didn’t have too much success following flops (see Kiffin, Dooley, Butch, Pruitt). Bama didn’t have too much success following Bear (see Perkins, Curry, Stallings, DuBose, Francione, Price, Shula). So, based on past history, it’s more difficult following a legend by a 7-4 margin.
