After a slow start to the game, the Diamond Vols had a breakout fifth inning to secure an instate rivalry win against Tennessee Tech on Tuesday, 11-1, snapping a two-game losing streak to the Golden Eagles.
Next up: SEC competition resumes as the Georgia Bulldogs travel to East Tennessee this weekend to finish off the long homestand. Georgia brings with them a 21-4 record and a four-game win streak.
Burke can make history this week:
Tennessee’s Blake Burke hit his 39th homerun Tuesday night. He is one away from tying the Vols’ career home run record (40) set by Luke Lipcius in 2022. He has a chance to not only tie, but to break the record this weekend.
On the mend:
After hitting a grand-slam Sunday against Ole Miss, Vols’ third baseman Billy Amick missed Tuesday’s game due to an appendix injury. Dean Curley shifted from shortstop to third in place of the ailing Amick. It is unknown at this time if Amick will be available for the weekend matchup with Georgia.
Bulldog bats to watch:
Georgia’s first baseman Corey Collins was named the week six SEC player of the week. He had an impressive stretch, tallying 29 bases, six home runs, 13 RBIs, 11 hits and eight runs. He had a career-high eight RBIs in an 18-6 win over Wofford last Tuesday.
Potential MLB No. 1 draft pick sophomore Charlie Condon hit three home runs last Saturday in a double-header against the Crimson Tide. He has already been named SEC player of the week twice this season.
Dawgs are on a roll:
After getting swept by Kentucky on the first weekend of SEC play, the Bulldogs turned things around and won all three games versus Alabama the following week. Tuesday’s matchup against Mercer was postponed due to weather.
