What a fun and successful spring sports performance Tennessee Athletics is having. Spring football just finished following an Elite 8 run by men’s basketball. Tennessee tennis beat Florida, 4-1, to advance to the SEC Tournament Semifinals before falling to South Carolina. More to come on Tennessee Tennis in a future From The Stands column. Both the Vols and Lady Vols are having stellar seasons on the diamond with the Vols having just completed a series sweep of defending national champion LSU and have evened their series with Kentucky. For today, let’s discuss the 7th ranked Tennessee men’s golf team who is coming off their third tournament win of the season tying a program best record.
On April 9th, the Vols won the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial Tournament by twelve strokes over distant runner-up and 6th ranked Florida State. Coach Brennan Webb is the first Tennessee Golf coach to produce three triple win seasons. Redshirt senior Bryce Lewis placed the highest for the Vols finishing 2nd. Sophomore Evan Woosley-Reed placed third followed by redshirt freshman Bruce Murphy who finished 6th. Murphy also received the SEC Freshman of the Week honors for the second time this season. Tennessee appears to be bringing a tough, competitive team to Sea Island next week to battle for the SEC Championship.
While Tennessee is stout across the lineup, it could have been even better if defending SEC Individual Champion Caleb Surratt had completed his sophomore season instead of joining the pro ranks. Surratt has already pocketed over one million dollars in earnings since joining the LIV tour in January 2024. He was the first Tennessee golfer to be named first team All-American.
Even losing a stud player like Surratt, Tennessee will still be one of the favorites next week at St. Simons Island as the SEC teams battle it out for the SEC Championship.
