DALLAS, Texas – There haven’t been many players make return trips to SEC Media Days. Add Tennessee defensive tackle Omari Thomas to the list.
Thomas, who was at SEC Media Days last season, will take to the various podiums on Tuesday. No offense to Thomas, but there were clearly players, such as quarterback Nico Iamaleava or EDGE rusher James Pearce, that would have created more of a buzz in Dallas. No matter. Thomas deserves the love.
Thomas started 12 games last season and played in 11, which is no small feat for an SEC interior lineman. Thomas was also at his best last season. Already a known contributor, Thomas hit career highs last year with 35 tackles. That may not seem like a ton, but it’s important to note what Thomas is asked to do, which often times is to take up blockers while other linemen make plays.
“Big O” is incredibly overlooked when it comes to potential impact players that are back for another season. Thomas could have gone onto the NFL, but the love for Tennessee and, likely, some NIL cash got him back for another season. That’s good. That Vols could always use a player like Thomas.
Why he’s in Dallas?
For all those that would love to hear from Iamaleava or Pearce sometime soon, that time will come. However, there is, indeed, a ton of pressure on attendees at SEC Media Days and Thomas is a known commodity.
Thomas isn’t going to say anything that might cause a stir. He is much like his head coach in that regard. I’m sure that played into Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel’s selection.
