Tennessee’s backfield may have just gotten much, much better with the addition of one of the most talented players in the Vols’ most recent signing class.
Running back Peyton Lewis confirmed to Off The Hook Sports that he has been cleared to participate fully after a myriad of offseason injuries that limited his ability to practice until the past few days.
“I got cleared with my pelvic injury quite awhile ago,” the freshman from Salem, Va., said. “I just recently got cleared with my shoulder.”
That medical update could be big for the Vols as they try to find a tailback that can share time with starter Dylan Sampson, who is proven as a junior, but not as big as a typical every-down tailback at 5-foot-11 and 201 pounds.
“The season is coming up pretty soon and I have a lot of preparation for it,” Lewis said. “I’m really excited to get into the competition part of it. I didn’t have much of a spring, so I’m ready to get into fall camp and prove myself. I’m really excited about that.”
The competition behind Sampson is thought to be between Lewis and sophomore Cameron Seldon, who played in all 13 games as a reserve tailback last season. Both were rated as four-star prospects coming out of high school.
“I’m feeling really great,” said Lewis, who is 6-1 and 210 pounds. “When I came in here, I had some nicks and bangs…I got those fixed and now I’m feeling fresh.
That’s pretty good timing. The Vols begin preseason camp on July 31.
