Tennessee’s secondary rebuilding project hit a major snag over the weekend as the Vols lost their first player to a season-ending injury in preseason camp.
Jourdan Thomas, who many believed could lock down a starting position with the Vols at their ’Star’ position or nickelback. Thomas’ loss would seem to be freshman Boo Carter’s gain. Many thought the former Chattanooga star would eventually be the starter at nickelback, supplanting Thomas. Therefore, this injury could accelerate Carter’s ascension as a starter. Still, it would be a lot to ask Carter to be fully ready by the beginning of the season. There surely will be some pages of the playbook he’s not completely comfortable with.
Cornerback Christian Charles could be an option in Thomas’ place at nickelback. However, like Thomas, Charles has had more than his fair share of injuries. Temple transfer Jalen McMurray could also be a possibility at nickel, although he was slated to play cornerback this season.
The entire scenario is playing out how many recruiting fans would like it. Carter was a fan favorite because of his sometimes chaotic recruitment, his high ranking and fans always love in-state players. Now, he’ll get more of an opportunity. However, asking any freshman to play in the SEC is a challenge. And nickel isn’t an easy position to learn.
Carter’s response to more opportunity during fall camp will be key. His preparation beforehand will also be a factor. Did Carter do everything he could to get ready mentally? At 5-foot-11 and 195 pounds, is he physically ready? It looks like we’re all about to find out.
