Tennessee’s receiver situation seems a bit vexed over recent history. The Vols have loss their best wideout to a serious injury in each of the past two seasons. Both occurred in the first month of the season. In other words, depth has proven to be a necessity, not just a luxuxy, for the Vols’ receiving corp.
If you’re looking for a player who could provide depth and knows the system, sophomore Kaleb Webb is your guy. Webb played in every game last season, caught 16 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown. He is now establishing himself as one of the Vols’ go-to receivers this fall. The key for Webb is just winning more one-on-one battles.
“I would just say finishing the big plays,” said Webb, who is from Powder Springs, Ga., “50/50 balls kind of make or break you in this league…I wanted to dive deeper into film this year, make sure I am prepared for anything I will see in a game this year.”
Winning one-on-one battles against defensive backs this season will be how Webb is ultimately judged. However, with a deep set of receivers, Webb deserves some credit for just being in the mix as a sophomore.
“I love the competition,” he said. “I feel like that is why you come to the SEC. You want to be pushed to your limit and reach your max potential. I feel like the receivers we already have, and the newcomers like Chris (Brazzell II), it has definitely helped my game, as well as helped him develop, to allow us to give us the best shot to be playmakers this year.”
Who will the Vols’ playmakers be this fall? If the past two seasons are any indication, there might be a surprise or two in the mix. Webb seems ready.
