There’s nothing quite like the Tennessee Vols versus the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Third Saturday in October and the Victory Cigar.
The Tennessee-Alabama rivalry is inarguably one of college football’s most renowned traditions. On the 107th Third Saturday in October matchup, the Vols and their fans, celebrated Tennessee’s 24-17 victory over the Tide with another longstanding tradition – lighting a victory cigar.
The start of the tradition is said to have taken place in 1961 when a bet led then Alabama athletic trainer Jim Goostree to light up a cigar in the Crimson Tide locker room and dance around naked after the Tide’s first victory over the Vols in six years. Goosetree went on to become Assistant Athletic Director at Alabama, let’s hope he stayed fully dressed in that position.
This was Tennessee’s turn to light up the storied stogie’s as evident on social media.
So, Tennessee Volunteer’s – light ’em up…
If you’re a quarterback…
If you’re a coach…
Chant along…
If you got ’em…
Be a vibe…
On the field…
Even if you don’t know how…
Even without trying…
Smoke ’em if you’ve got ’em, Big Orange Country. But, please, keep your clothes on.
