DALLAS, Texas – This might not be the last time a Mays represents Tennessee at SEC Media Days. The best may still be on the way.
If you’ve followed Off The Hook Sports at all, you’re very familiar with Tennessee center Cooper Mays. After all, he’s part of a regular podcast that airs on this very website.
There has been plenty to discuss with Mays’ play on the field, such as Tennessee’s success and his family. Mays’ brother, Cade Mays, plays for the Carolina Panthers after beginning his college career at Georgia then transferring to Tennessee. Mays’ father was also a standout offensive lineman for the Vols, just like both of his sons – and maybe a third.
While Mays is out of eligibility this season, he may not be the last of his clan to represent the Vols at SEC Media Days. Camp Mays could make the rounds one day, even though he’s just 12-years-old, he is trending to be bigger than his older brothers and, according to Cooper, could be the best of the bunch. However, the time is now for Cooper Mays.
Why he’s in Dallas
If there’s been a more important offensive lineman to his team, I haven’t seen it in over 25 years of covering college football. Mays handles the line calls, helps set up plays and makes sure everyone is doing what they’re supposed to do up front. Everyone saw what happened to the Vols last season when Mays was out with an injury. Tennessee lost to a team that would eventually end up 5-7. The Vols – with Mays – were better than that.
