Burns Tabbed As NCBWA Freshman Pitcher Of The Year

Freshman pitcher and early-season Friday starter Chase Burns has won the NCBWA (National College Baseball Writer’s Association) Freshman Pitcher of the Year award, the university announced Tuesday.

Burns garnered a handful of awards this season. He was a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy. He was also named a third-team All-American, becoming the first freshman Vol to receiver the honor since R.A. Dickey in 1994.

Burns was named the Collegiate Baseball Co-Freshman National Player of the Year earlier this season, sharing with NC State freshman and transfer Tommy White.

The Gallatin, Tennessee native finished the year 8-2 with a 2.91 ERA and 103 total punchouts. His aforementioned ERA is the fifth lowest by a freshman in Tennessee history.
