Why Tennessee’s timing was perfect with the Vols’ newest commitment

Tennessee commitment Rickey Gibson might not explode off of the internet when it comes to recruiting rankings. College coaches might take issue with that.

Gibson, who is just a three-star prospect, was being pursued by some heavyweights, including Tennessee, Arkansas and Georgia. The 6-foot-1, 171-pound cornerback from Trussville (Ala.) High School made his announcement via social media on Sunday.

Gibson is rated as the No. 51 cornerback in the 2023 class and the No. 23 overall prospect in the state of Alabama. Given the strong, recent interest in Gibson, those recruiting rankings are bound to rise.

The Vols deserve credit for targeting and recruiting Gibson in order to land him before his stock begins to rise in the coming months. It would be no surprise if Gibson ended up being a four-star prospect. The Vols have 20 commitments for the 2023 class. They are currently rated as the No. 12 class in the nation. That figures to rise with Gibson’s commitment.
