UPDATE: Josh Heupel with the latest NCAA news on Tennessee WR transfer Bru McCoy

Tennessee coach Josh Heupel had no update on Bru McCoy’s eligibility. However, it’s clear that there’s not much time remaining to get the Southern California transfer up to speed.

“Getting him prepared and being able to rep him, you’d like that before you start your regular game-plan week,” Heupel said following practice on Friday.

Tennessee’s game-week schedule will start on Aug. 26 since the Vols open the season with a Thursday night game against Ball State on Sept. 1.

McCoy has been able to practice since transferring to Tennessee from Southern California. However, he hasn’t yet been cleared to play by the NCAA, which seems to have an issue over McCoy transferring to Texas, then back to USC before making his latest move, which was to Tennessee.

NCAA rules dictate that McCoy would be ineligible to play this season. However, exemptions are frequently granted.

“Our administration has done everything they possibly can,” Heupel said. “They’ve been great throughout the entire process from the very beginning. They’re still working as hard as they can to give him the opportunity to play.”

When asked if there was a timeframe for the NCAA’s decision on McCoy, Heupel said, “There are some things that are out of my control, Bru’s control and our administration’s control in this process.

“Everybody on our side is working as hard as they possibly can to make sure that we come to a resolution as quickly as possible and give a kid an opportunity to go play.”
