As the transfer portal continues to evolve, more names are cropping up as potential fits for Tennessee, which landed three new players from the portal on Wednesday.
Here are three quarterbacks worth keeping an eye on:
Davis Brin
Brin decided to enter the transfer portal after a 5-7 season at Tulsa. He has one year of eligibility remaining so he could be a great stopgap to play if five-star quarterback commitment Nico Iamaleava isn’t ready to play in 2023. Iamaleava is scheduled to enroll in January. The unknown continues with the Vols’ current quarterbacks; Joe Milton III has had accuracy issues and Tayven Jackson is unproven against serious competition.
Brin, who is from Texas, started the 2021 season and threw for 3,254 yards and 18 touchdowns. However, he also threw 16 interceptions so that would be a concern, but things got better in a much more challenging 2022 season.
Behind an offensive line that struggled mightily, Brin was sacked 32 times on just 250 passing attempts. He still threw for 2,138 yards and 17 touchdowns in nine games as he was plagued by nagging injuries. Despite the offensive line issues, Brin improved his ball security, only throwing nine interceptions in 2022.
Austin Reed
Reed, who is now transferring from Western Kentucky, began his career at Southern Illinois then transferred to West Florida before WKU. In 2022, Reed completed 353-of-547 passes for 4,247 yards and 36 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. Reed can also run and accounted for eight touchdowns on the ground. He’s looking for a Power Five school and Tennessee is obviously nearby. Reed, however, is from Florida.
Ty Simpson
To be clear, Simpson is not in the transfer portal, might never be and could even win the starting job at Alabama in spring practice. However, there have been some indicators that Simpson could, indeed, enter the portal eventually, especially after Jalen Milroe started in place of Bryce Young when he was injured last year. Simpson played at Martin (Tenn.) High School so there’s reason to think the Vols would be in play if Simpson leaves Tuscaloosa. Simpson also wouldn’t be just a stopgap. He has three years of eligibility remaining.
