Tennessee football landed another commitment in its 2024 class on Monday, its fifth of the class.

Four-star wide receiver J.J. Harrell of Mississippi pledged to the Vols.

Harrell is a Sardis, Miss., native. He attends North Panola High School. At 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, he will give the Vols good size and versatility at the wide receiver position.

Ranking-wise, Harrell is a four-star across the board. He sits as the No. 5 prospect from Mississippi, and the No. 32 wide receiver in the 2024 class.

Harrell chose the Vols because they made him feel at home.

“From the jump Tennessee kept it real with me and my family,” Harrell told On3. “The first day they offered me Coach Pope told me he believed in me and he gone forever stand on loyalty on his end. Coach Heupel and the entire staff checks on me everyday to make sure I’m good mentally and physically. It feels like home to me and the family knows it’s the right choice for me.”

He chose Tennessee football over LSU, Alabama, Georgia and Ole Miss, among others. He joins four-star athlete Johnathan Echols, four-star cornerback Kaleb Beasley, three-star athlete Marcus Goree Jr. and three-star defensive lineman Carson Gentle as members of the 2024 class.

Tennessee’s class currently sits in the top-15 early in this cycle.

Obviously, UT will be enticing to elite receivers across the country for as long as Josh Heupel is head coach there. His system has produced a 1,000-yard receiver in back to back years, one a wideout and one in the slot.

Jalin Hyatt winning the Biletnikoff Award this past year only helps that case. It’s unclear given his current size where Harrell would line up, but he appears on track to be another wideout.

With the decommitment of Mazeo Bennett back in December, who decided to stay home and commit to the South Carolina Gamecocks, this is a good pickup for Tennessee football. Heupel needs more options at receiver for the future, and Harrell certainly provides that.
