July 4 is in the books, and preseason news of Tennessee Football continues to roll in. Caleb Calhoun and Dave Hooker discuss rankings of the Vols’ offense and wide receiver room for Off The Hook Sports’ Wednesday, June 5 podcast. They also dive into overrated coaches, compare Josh Heupel to Gus Malzahn and question what the 12-team College Football Playoff will look like.
Will Tennessee Football have nation’s most explosive offense?
Brad Crawford of 247Sports named Tennessee Football to his list of the 12 most explosive offenses in the nation for 2023. This comes despite the Vols losing Hendon Hooker, their top offensive lineman and their top two wide receivers. Can their offense still be as elite with Joe Milton III?
PFF excludes Tennessee Football WR room from top 10
A ranking of the top 10 wide receiver rooms in the nation by Pro Football Focus left off Tennessee Football. Now, this is an analytical ranking, and the Vols did lose Jalin Hyatt and Cedric Tillman. However, with guys like Squirrel White, Dont’e Thornton, Ramel Keyton and Bru McCoy, shouldn’t this unit still be on the list?
Will 12-team CFP wildcard teams be exclusively from SEC, Big Ten?
Joel Klatt recently predicted that the 12-team College Football Playoff, which goes into effect in 2024, could exclude every conference outside of the Big Ten and SEC when it comes to the six wildcard spots. Is he correct with that assessment? Does this create other long-term issues for the sport?
Who’s more overrated: Mike Norvell, Ryan Day or Steve Sarkisian?
While he had Tennessee Football among the top 12 explosive offenses, another ranking by Crawford of 247Sports left Josh Heupel off the list of best coaches without a national championship. However, Mike Norvell, Ryan Day and Steve Sarkisian were all on that list. Which of those coaches is the most overrated?
Is Josh Heupel too much like Gus Malzahn?
Josh Heupel isn’t the first head coach in the SEC to make an early splash at a program because of his offensive system. Gus Malzahn and Kevin Sumlin did the same thing, and both were eventually fired with no national championship. How can we be sure Heupel isn’t like one of them?
