3 Steps to Fix the NCAA

There are multiple institutions in the world of sports that could benefit from some kind of modification, whether it be in rules on the field, consequences off the field, or even personnel. From the NFL to pee-wee football, everything could use fine-tuning at the very least.  However, the NCAA is riddled with so many problems that it makes all other institutions look flawless. It doesn’t need an adjustment or a tweak; it needs a complete takeover.

There are more than 3 problems that plague the NCAA, but these are the 3 that need to be addressed before it all comes tumbling down.

Transfer portal decisions

The transfer portal isn’t a terrible idea, but when there are very little rules and practically no governing body to oversee it, things tend to get crazy. Players are transferring multiple times while the NCAA is signing waivers like a D-list celebrity starring in the threequel of an awful movie. Some players are pushed through while others are put on hold. There is no rhyme or reason to the madness.

Recruiting with the NIL

Whether you like it or not, the NIL is here to stay. The problem is that there weren’t many regulations put in place for this new era, and the regulations that exist aren’t being enforced. In fact, the NCAA has come out to ask for “help” from institutions to better police these NIL deals. Basically, what they’re asking is for programs to tattle on their rivals with the promise of anonymity, which is relatively impossible, to make their jobs easier.

No thanks.

School and player accountability

We’re in a world where neither the university nor the student has any responsibility to each other. The school can drop a player’s scholarship after one season, and sometimes even before.  The player, on the other hand, can pretty much transfer out at will.  Coaches are the only asset under contract. Yes, they’re often sought after by other institutions, but there are repercussions for their early departure, unlike the university or the player. An entire team can have a different identity from one season to the next.

So how do we fix these problems without dismantling college football?
