Tight end is a position of need for Tennessee football in the transfer portal. Already, the Vols and tight ends coach Alec Abeln are targeting a tight end they faced during the regular season — UConn’s Justin Joly.

In two seasons at UConn, Joly caught 76 passes for 828 yards and four touchdowns. This year was his best year by production, hauling in 56 passes for 578 yards and two touchdowns. When he played against Tennessee in November, Joly had eight receptions for 89 yards.

Joly led UConn in receptions and yards. The Huskies finished 3-9 on the year. He entered the transfer portal on Thursday.

Tennessee is making early headway with Joly, and the Vols are expected to host him on a visit.

Joly was ranked as a two-star prospect out of Iona Preparatory School in New York. He was a class of 2022 wide receiver but turned into a tight end at UConn.

With McCallan Castles and Jacob Warren out of eligibility, the Vols are in need of depth at tight end. Freshmen Ethan Davis and Emmanuel Okoye have shown promise, but they still have room to grow .

Joly joins MTSU DL Marley Cook and Texas A&M OL Remington Strickland as Tennessee portal targets.

In Joly’s farewell message to UConn, he thanked the staff and fans.

“I am thankful and blessed to have had the opportunity to play the sport that I love at the University of Connecticut. I am grateful to my family, especially my parents for their unwavering support throughout these years as a Husky.

“Thank you to Coach Mora, Coach Marinelli and the entire UCONN coaching staff for this tremendous opportunity. My experiences here have further developed me as a player, student athlete and person.
To my brothers, this brotherhood will not be forgotten!! As we battled on the field, we created lifelong memories.

‘To UCONN Nation I would like to thank this football community for embracing and accepting me into the BLEED BLUE family. Thank you for supporting not only myself throughout the season, but also this entire football team. Great things are in store for the UCONN football program.
Thank you all!

“With that being said I am entering the transfer portal with 2 years of eligibility.”

  1. Apropos of absolutely nothing, how about Jason Witten for new OL/TE coach? Our guy did a good job this year holding things together, what with all the injuries, so… I’m just throwing it out there.
