Alabama’s issues can only help Tennessee Vols, but how much?

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Tennessee is well placed to benefit from Alabama’s recent run of bad luck.

The Vols have an advantage over other teams that might try to take advantage of the Crimson Tide after former head coach Nick Saban retired in January. Since then, Kalen DeBoer, who was tabbed to replace Saban after a successful run at Washington, has seen multiple players and prospects exit Tuscaloosa via a very loose transfer portal after Saban retired. The next challenge for the former Huskies coach is to hold onto one of his highest rated prospects, which Tennessee has made up strong ground on.

Dontrell Glover of Langston Hughes High School in Fairburn, Ga., announced that the Vols made his final list of schools for the four-star prospect. Tennessee was joined alongside Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri and Georgia Tech as the suitors in good stead via Glover’s social media post on X. That’s quite a change from Glover’s recruitment previous to Saban’s retirement. Glover had been committed to Bama since spring 2023 but pulled his commitment in January.

Glover is rated the No. 193 overall prospect in the country, the No. 9 interior offensive lineman in the nation and the No. 27 junior in the state of Georgia. He’s not the only Alabama commitment the Vols should keep close tabs on, but there might not be as many as you think.

Alabama has just three commitments for the 2025 class: running back Anthony Rogers from Carver High School in Montgomery, Ala., defensive lineman Antonio Coleman from Saraland (Ala.) High School and Myles Johnson from T.R. Miller High School in Brewton, Ala.

All of Alabama’s commitments are four-star prospects, but all hail from the state of Alabama. That could make things tough on opposing recruiters. However, it’s also a sign that Bama is on the ground floor when it comes to assembling its 2025 class, which currently ranks 26th in the country. While those commitments are certainly up for grabs, it’s worth noting that 2024 signees can still transfer during upcoming portal windows. That might be the Vols’ best opportunity to flip the Tide.
